B&S #30: New McCall's Cosplay patterns! "Renegade" & "Sentinel"
Bodacious
There are two new Cosplay by McCall’s patterns out, Renegade and Sentinel! As usual, I’ll review them and give suggestions for a steampunk spin. In writing about them, I even came up with a steampunk setting where both would fit beautifully.
I see a whole world coming together from Renegade and Sentinel. In it, civilization quickly crumbled in the latter half of the 19th century. The people remaining reacted with the spirit of the Industrial age, by coming up with new inventions powered by steam. Across the globe, new governments try to rebuild, but others forge their own path. The Renegades are a secret society of thieves, assassins, and revolutionaries. The Sentinels, disgusted with what society has become, have taken to living in the forest and mountains.
Renegade
The initial impression I get of Renegade says “futuristic.” The interesting thing is that the fabric suggested for the lining, Coutil, was created as a fabric for corsets in the 19th century. The pattern includes an information section about the fabric and why it’s so good for corsets, as well as tips on using reflective pipping and tape.
I could see this used for an adventurer in a dystopian 1800s steampunk world, or one in which fashion had taken a slightly different turn. Add a coat, such as Trenched, for an eastern assassin. Of course, keep the coat open and take it off at times to show off that stitching in the back of the corset! As you’ll see, this pattern is rated “advanced” for good reason.
Renegade was designed for McCall’s by Anachronism in Action, and retails for just $16.95.
Sentinel
I must say that I love the look of Sentinel. It’s very fantasy, very Robin Hood. I image the woman with futuristic gear accompanying her tunic, leggings, coat, and hood, and perhaps some advanced arrows for her bow, reminiscent of modern archer heroes like Green Arrow, Hawkeye, and Katniss Everdeen.
The tips accompanying the pattern explain how to embellish the look with paint., You can see in the pattern images that McCall’s used various types of paint on the eyelets, lacing, and bracers.
Add steampunk extras like goggles, masks, gadget-filled bracers, and more to either of these to add that retro-futuristic vibe.
Sentinel is an intermediate skill level pattern, and costs $15.95.
Sundry
It’s been too long since I’ve written a blog post! I love writing one or two posts per week, but this month has been nuts.
Moving
I’m moving, so looking for a new apartment took a while. However, I’ve found a place, and we’re moving soon. It’s not far from where we live now, actually, but it’s a first floor apartment, which means it’ll be cooler, and is a bit bigger than my current flat.
I have so many blog posts planned. Maybe now I can start getting to them.
Requests
With Bodacious Creed coming out soon, I’d love more people to visit the blog, and so on. Help me out by doing one or more things on this list. One is enough!

Bodacious Creed
With the move, it’s been tough to work on the novel. I hate to admit that, but it’s true. However, we’re moving next week, which is exciting! It’s a chance to rearrange everything and set up a brand new writing space. I’m quickly approaching the climax of the novel. A lot of stuff is about to go down in my 19th century version of Santa Cruz! Shoot outs, outlaws, crazy inventions, and more!
I still hope to get it published this November! December by the latest. This will make a fantastic Christmas, Yule, Hanukkah… whatever you celebrate… present for the steampunk fans in your life, including yourself!
I've surpassed 21,000 followers on Twitter! That's all. I'm ecstatic.
See y'all soon!
